Aizawl: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon inaugurate the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line and the newly constructed Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram, the state government said on Monday. The announcement follows a meeting between Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and PM Modi in New Delhi.
The ambitious 51.38 km railway line, connecting Bairabi to Sairang, took nearly two decades to complete and was officially commissioned by the Commissioner of Railway Safety in June 2025.
Key Engineering Highlights
According to officials from Northeast Frontier Railway, the project includes:
- 48 tunnels spanning a total of 12.85 km
- 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges
- 5 road overbridges and 9 road underbridges
- One bridge — Bridge No. 196 — stands out with a height of 104 metres
This railway line is expected to significantly boost connectivity and economic development in Mizoram by linking it more efficiently with the rest of the country.
CM Lalduhoma’s Meeting with PM Modi
During his meeting with PM Modi, Chief Minister Lalduhoma also discussed several other state matters, including:
- Thenzawl Peace City Project
- The Aizawl–Thenzawl National Highway
- Implementation of a Hand Holding Policy for sustainable development
- The ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s Chin Hills and its spillover impact on Mizoram, particularly the influx of refugees
Gas Pipeline Project Update
The ₹9,265 crore Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) Pipeline Project — aimed at supplying piped gas to Aizawl households — was also on the agenda. The Chief Minister raised concerns about construction delays.
PM Modi responded by recommending that the Mamit District Collector expedite official clearances to speed up pipeline construction, according to the official government release.
What It Means for Mizoram
The upcoming inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line marks a milestone in infrastructure development for Mizoram and the Northeast. Alongside gas infrastructure and road expansion projects, these developments are expected to enhance logistics, reduce travel time, and improve living standards in the region.
