PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit To Saudi Arabia Touted As A ‘Milestone’ For India’s Ties With Gulf And Islamic World

New Delhi [India], April 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia is being hailed as a major step forward in enhancing India’s ties not only with the Kingdom but across the entire Gulf and Islamic world.

Former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla emphasized that the visit underscores a transformed relationship, driven by PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts and personal rapport with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.

“Prime Minister Modi has worked on a relationship that has undergone transformation with the entire Gulf region, starting from the UAE to Saudi Arabia,” Shringla said.
“His personal connection with Mohammed bin Salman has guided and steered the relationship forward.”

Key Areas of Focus: Energy, Trade, and Defence

Shringla cited energy cooperation as a vital pillar of the bilateral relationship. “Saudi Arabia holds substantial fossil fuel reserves, which is vital for India as a key importer,” he said, adding that Riyadh sees New Delhi as a valuable strategic partner.

This will be PM Modi’s third visit to Saudi Arabia, further highlighting the significance of India’s outreach to West Asia. Shringla described the trip as a “milestone visit” that could enhance India’s influence in the broader Arab and Islamic world.

Strategic Partnership Council: Second Session in Jeddah

Former Ambassador Mahesh Sachdev also described the visit as “extremely significant”, pointing to Saudi Arabia’s central role in regional geopolitics and economic influence.

“The formation of the Strategic Partnership Council between India and Saudi Arabia is a big development. The second session, to be held during this visit in Jeddah, will allow both sides to strategize and explore new opportunities for collaboration,” he stated.

Investment and Defence on the Agenda

Sachdev stressed the importance of scaling up investment ties, noting that while trade volumes are strong, investment flows have not yet matched potential. He urged both nations to “strategize to boost bilateral investment”, especially in sectors like infrastructure, energy, technology, and defense manufacturing.

On security and defence cooperation, he remarked:

“Saudi Arabia is seeking trusted partners to strengthen its defence capabilities, and India fits that role well. Bilateral cooperation in this space is already growing and can be significantly bolstered through this visit.”

Broader Implications

PM Modi’s Saudi visit is expected to consolidate India’s growing footprint in the Gulf region, where it is increasingly seen as a reliable partner for energy security, economic diversification, and defence collaboration. As both nations gear up for high-level meetings, this visit could define the next phase of India’s West Asia policy.
