Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to combat obesity and reduce oil consumption has received strong backing from the medical fraternity, who emphasize the urgent need for a healthier lifestyle.
Medical Experts Highlight the Growing Obesity Epidemic
Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director at AIIMS Nagpur, pointed out that India is facing a rising obesity epidemic due to sedentary lifestyles, high-fat diets, sugary beverages, and excessive junk food consumption. He warned that obesity leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes.
“Preventing obesity requires adopting a healthy lifestyle, engaging in physical activity, and maintaining a balanced diet,” he advised.
Dr. Sunil Chandy, Co-Chair of the CII Public Health Council and Director of ITC Healthcare, echoed similar concerns, calling obesity a new public health hazard.
“The Prime Minister spoke eloquently about how obesity is affecting the Indian population. This lifestyle disease increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, and breathing difficulties,” he noted.
He praised PM Modi’s simple and cost-effective interventions, such as:

Dr. Anshuman Darbari, Additional Professor at AIIMS Rishikesh, applauded PM Modi’s initiative, emphasizing that unhealthy eating habits not only harm individuals but also impact society as a whole.
“Obesity-related diseases like heart problems and diabetes are not just personal health issues but have far-reaching consequences on families and society,” Dr. Darbari stated.

The Prime Minister highlighted the growing obesity issue while inaugurating the 38th National Games in Dehradun. He emphasized the importance of the Fit India Movement, encouraging citizens to:
