Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gangtok, Sikkim, today to participate in the “Sikkim@50: Where Progress Meets Purpose and Nature Nurtures Growth” programme, commemorating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood. The golden jubilee event celebrates the northeastern state’s remarkable journey since joining the Indian Union in 1975.
The year-long celebration is themed “Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim” (Golden, Prosperous, and Capable Sikkim), emphasizing the state’s blend of cultural vibrancy, natural beauty, and developmental strides.
Major Announcements and Inaugurations
PM Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated key development projects, aimed at accelerating infrastructure and connectivity in the region. Highlights include:
- A 500-bed district hospital in Namchi, estimated at Rs 750 crore.
- A passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling, Gyalshing district.
- Unveiling of a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the newly named Atal Amrit Udyan in Gangtok.
Additionally, he released a commemorative coin, souvenir coin, and postal stamp to mark the golden jubilee of Sikkim’s statehood.
Public Enthusiasm and Local Participation
The atmosphere in Sikkim was festive, as residents dressed in traditional attire welcomed the Prime Minister with great enthusiasm.
“We are very excited. It is a big achievement that our Prime Minister is coming to our state,” said Sonam Bhutia, a local resident.
Tikha Khannal, a participant of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, said:
“We have made comprehensive arrangements for his visit. Even the weather supports us today.”
Dibash Rutung, in traditional Gurung attire, said:
“We want to showcase our rich culture to the Prime Minister.”
Political and Developmental Significance
State BJP President DR Thapa welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, noting that it will open new developmental avenues for Sikkim.
“He will inaugurate many infrastructural projects and lay the foundation of several upcoming initiatives,” Thapa said.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi will continue his outreach tour with visits to West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh on May 29 and 30, launching and laying the foundation of projects collectively worth over Rs 70,000 crore.
PM Modi’s visit reaffirms the central government’s commitment to accelerated development in India’s Northeast, while honouring Sikkim’s unique cultural and natural legacy.
