Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to mark a historic moment in Jammu and Kashmir’s development on Friday as he visits Reasi district, where he will inaugurate a slew of major infrastructure projects, including the world’s highest railway bridge — the Chenab Bridge — and flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Katra, to Srinagar.
A Landmark in Indian Rail Infrastructure
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a massive engineering marvel built at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, comprising:
- 272 km total stretch
- 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km)
- 943 bridges
- And the Chenab Bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed, making it the highest railway bridge in the world — taller than the Eiffel Tower.
This development not only symbolizes India’s engineering prowess but also paves the way for seamless connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir’s regions, which were once separated by rugged terrain and limited access.
Student Excitement and Local Reactions
Amid heightened security in Udhampur and Reasi, students and locals gathered at Katra railway station to greet PM Modi and witness the historic moment.
“We have come here to welcome Modi ji. The first Vande Bharat train will go from here. I’m very excited,” said a student, adding that such development makes them feel proud to be part of a growing India.
Another student said:
“Goosebumps! That’s what I feel. With the Vande Bharat starting from here and Katra developing, J&K will soon be at par with other states.”
Tourists Join the Celebration
Tourists visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine and nearby attractions also expressed joy. One of them, Jaiswal from Banaras, who resides in Modi’s parliamentary constituency, said:
“Who thought a rail line would reach Srinagar, that too via such a magnificent bridge? This is a big dream being fulfilled. I’ll definitely travel by Vande Bharat next time.”
Though he couldn’t board the inaugural train as it starts tomorrow, he remained enthusiastic:
“The comfort, speed, and scenic beauty will be unmatched. This is a blessing for pilgrims and tourists alike.”
Economic and Tourism Boost Anticipated
The new Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat trains are expected to significantly boost tourism, pilgrimage, and local businesses. With modern coaches, reduced travel time, and better accessibility, the project aligns with the Centre’s larger push to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with India’s mainstream economic and transport grid.
Security on High Alert
Given the high-profile nature of the event, security has been tightened in Reasi, Udhampur, and Katra with heavy deployment, thorough checks, and surveillance to ensure a smooth visit.
A Giant Leap for J&K
With this launch, Prime Minister Modi reaffirms his commitment to the development of Jammu and Kashmir, signaling a future of improved connectivity, increased tourism, and socio-economic growth for the region long marked by isolation.
This isn’t just a train launch — it’s a moment of pride, unity, and unprecedented transformation for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
