PM Modi To Inaugurate Rs 8,900-Crore Vizhinjam International Deepwater Seaport In Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport today, marking the operational launch of the first phase of India’s first dedicated international deepwater transshipment port.

The project, developed at a cost of Rs 8,900 crore, is poised to significantly boost India’s maritime infrastructure and global trade capabilities.

Historic Milestone in Indian Maritime Sector

The Vizhinjam Seaport, located in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district, is envisioned as a game-changing development in India’s logistics and shipping ecosystem. With a natural draft depth of nearly 20 meters and close proximity to one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, the port is uniquely positioned to become a major transshipment hub, reducing India’s dependence on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore.

It represents a cornerstone of the Viksit Bharat (Developed India) initiative, showcasing the country’s growing ambitions in port-led development and economic self-reliance.

PM Modi to Tour Operations Centre Before Launch

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday night and will travel to the port site via helicopter. Before the formal inauguration, he is expected to tour the operations centre and deck to review the facilities and ongoing construction.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Welcomes PM

Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed the Prime Minister upon his arrival. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor stated:

“Despite delays at the dysfunctional Delhi airport, managed to land in Thiruvananthapuram in time to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival in my constituency. Looking forward to his officially commissioning Vizhinjam port, a project I have been proud to have been involved with since its inception.”

Tharoor has long championed the port as a vital infrastructure asset for the region and the nation.

Development Model: Public-Private Partnership

The port is being developed under a landlord model through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. The private concessionaire, Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited, began construction on December 5, 2015.

Strategic and Economic Significance

Kerala Ports Minister VN Vasavan, addressing a press briefing alongside state ministers and Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran, emphasized the port’s strategic and economic relevance:

  • It will strengthen India’s position in global trade.
  • It aims to enhance domestic logistics efficiency.
  • It will reduce dependency on foreign ports for transshipment.
  • It is expected to generate employment and spur economic activity in the region.

The port’s first-phase commissioning is being widely hailed as a watershed moment for India’s maritime ambitions.
