PM Modi to Attend Mauritius National Day As Chief Guest; Indian Defence Contingent To Participate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Chief Guest at the National Day celebrations of Mauritius on March 12, as part of a State Visit from March 11-12, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday. A contingent of the Indian Defence Forces and a naval ship will also participate in the celebrations.

According to the official statement, PM Modi is visiting Mauritius at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. During his visit, he will call on the President of Mauritius, hold meetings with PM Ramgoolam and other senior leaders, and engage with members of the Indian-origin community.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

PM Modi will also inaugurate two key projects— the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre—both developed with India’s grant assistance. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, further enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

India and Mauritius share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, with Mauritius playing a significant role in India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region). The MEA emphasized that the visit would reaffirm the strong bond between the two nations and strengthen bilateral collaboration in various sectors.

Mauritius PM Expresses Gratitude

Last month, Mauritius PM Ramgoolam addressed his country’s Parliament, expressing his delight at PM Modi’s acceptance of the invitation.
“It is indeed a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, despite his very tight schedule and his recent visits to Paris and the United States,” he stated.

He further highlighted that the visit underscores the enduring relationship between India and Mauritius, reflecting their shared commitment to mutual growth and development.
