PM Modi To Attend G7 Summit In Canada’s Kananaskis After Invitation From PM Mark Carney

New Delhi/Ottawa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday confirmed that he has accepted an invitation to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, after a phone call with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month,” Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He added:

“As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

The 2025 G7 Summit will be hosted by Canada from June 15 to 17 at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge in Alberta — a secluded resort known for hosting the 2002 G8 Summit.

Background and Context

India has been a regular invitee to the G7 outreach sessions since 2019, with invitations extended by France, the UK, Germany, Japan, and Italy in previous years. Though not a G7 member, India’s participation reflects its growing role in global economic and geopolitical discussions.

This year’s summit will be the first hosted by Mark Carney since he assumed office as Canada’s prime minister. Carney, a former central banker with stints at the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, has made strengthening international cooperation a pillar of his foreign policy.

India and Canada recently saw strained ties over diplomatic issues, but Modi’s statement hints at a willingness to reset relations:

“India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”
