New Delhi [India], April 9– Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top Tamil Nadu leaders expressed deep sorrow over the passing of senior Congress leader Kumari Ananthan, who died at the age of 93 due to age-related ailments.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi paid tribute, stating:
“Thiru Kumari Ananthan Ji will be remembered for his noteworthy service to society and passion for Tamil Nadu’s progress. He also made many efforts to popularise the Tamil language and culture. I am pained by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Kumari Ananthan, a prominent political figure and a five-time MLA in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, also served as a Member of Parliament from Nagercoil in 1977. He was known for his integrity, activism, and dedication to Tamil culture and social reform.
Tributes from Tamil Nadu leaders poured in, including Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, MDMK MP Vaiko, and DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who all paid their respects to the late leader.
MDMK MP Vaiko, praised Ananthan’s principled life and political legacy:
“Kumari Ananthan was a versatile personality. He introduced the right to ask questions in Tamil in Parliament—this was a historic achievement. He fought tirelessly against the liquor menace in the state. I have marched alongside him. He was a pillar of honesty and an asset to Tamil Nadu politics.”
CM M.K. Stalin shared an emotional note, recalling the last Independence Day celebration where Ananthan was presented with the ‘Tagaisaal Tamil Award’.
“I laid floral tributes to Ayya Kumari Ananthan, remembering how he held my hand tightly last year. His life will be honored with state honors. I extend condolences to all grieving, especially his dear sister Dr. Tamilisai.”
Kumari Ananthan was the father of former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, and remained deeply committed to social causes, language rights, and clean politics throughout his decades-long career.
His mortal remains will be kept for public homage at his daughter’s residence in Chennai’s Saligramam, and he will be laid to rest with state honors, as per the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement.
