New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to assess India’s preparedness in key sectors such as petroleum, crude oil, natural gas, power, and fertilisers amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
The meeting focused on ensuring uninterrupted supply chains, stable logistics, and efficient distribution of essential resources as geopolitical uncertainties continue to impact global energy markets.
Focus on Energy Security
Senior officials briefed the Prime Minister on current stock levels, import dependencies, and contingency plans to manage any potential disruptions. With India heavily reliant on Gulf nations for energy imports, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern.
Nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply passes through this critical route, which has been affected due to ongoing tensions involving Iran.
Emerging Concerns: Gas Shortage
While petrol and diesel prices have remained relatively stable in major cities, officials flagged a growing concern over LPG and natural gas supply disruptions.
- LPG shipments are facing delays, with several tankers reportedly stuck in transit
- Consumption has dropped in some regions due to supply uncertainty
- Long queues have been reported outside gas agencies and CNG stations
In cities like Vijayawada and parts of Maharashtra, people are experiencing extended waiting times for refuelling and cylinder refills.
Impact on Daily Life
The strain is already visible on the ground:
- Panic buying and hoarding in some areas
- Restaurants and commercial establishments facing LPG restrictions
- Auto drivers dependent on CNG dealing with long delays
Government Response
PM Modi directed ministries to coordinate closely, prevent shortages, control prices, and avoid panic among citizens. The government has also prioritised domestic LPG supply and increased allocations to essential sectors.
High Alert Situation
Although there is no immediate fuel crisis, early signs of stress—especially in gas supply—have put the government on high alert. Authorities are strengthening contingency plans in case the West Asia conflict escalates further.
India continues to closely monitor the situation, balancing domestic needs with global supply challenges.
