New Delhi [India]: On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the dignity and empowerment of persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he highlighted a decade of impactful policies and initiatives aimed at creating an inclusive society.
Celebrating Courage and Achievements
In a blog shared on the occasion, PM Modi paid tribute to the determination and accomplishments of persons with disabilities. He described December 3 as a day to honor their courage and to draw inspiration from their contributions. Quoting a Sanskrit saying that translates to “nothing is impossible for a person with enthusiasm,” he emphasized India’s historical respect for inclusivity.
Policy Milestones for Inclusion
PM Modi highlighted several key initiatives introduced over the past decade, including:
- Introduction of the Term ‘Divyang’: Replacing “Viklang” with “Divyang” in 2014, reflecting a shift in societal perception and recognition of the innate strengths of persons with disabilities.
- Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan: Launched nine years ago, this campaign aims to make public spaces and transportation systems accessible. Modi noted the transformative impact this initiative has had in enhancing the dignity and prosperity of Divyangjan.
- Legislative Framework: Implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Act expanded the definition of disability from 7 to 21 categories, including acid attack survivors, to ensure comprehensive coverage and support.
- Increased Opportunities: Reforms in reservation systems for education and jobs, tripling the budget for Divyang welfare, and connecting persons with disabilities to skill development programs.
Recognition in Sports and Startups
The Prime Minister expressed pride in the achievements of Divyang athletes in international arenas such as the Paralympics. He also highlighted their contributions to education, startups, and other fields, describing them as vital partners in India’s progress.
Vision for 2047
Looking ahead, PM Modi envisioned a future where India’s Divyang community serves as an inspiration globally by 2047, the 100th anniversary of India’s independence.
“Let us all together build a society where no dream and goal is impossible,” he urged.
The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating his government’s resolve to uphold the rights, dignity, and aspirations of persons with disabilities, ensuring their integral role in building an inclusive and developed India.
