PM Modi Pays Tribute To Veer Savarkar On His Death Anniversary

New Delhi (India), February 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary, remembering his significant contribution to the freedom movement. In a message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi said, “On behalf of all countrymen, respectful tribute to Veer Savarkar ji on his death anniversary. The grateful nation can never forget his invaluable contribution filled with penance, sacrifice, courage, and struggle in the freedom movement.”

Veer Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur, Maharashtra, is regarded as one of India’s most influential freedom fighters. He was not only a prominent freedom fighter but also a lawyer, writer, politician, and activist. Savarkar played a key role in the Hindu Mahasabha and was known for his revolutionary ideas aimed at achieving Indian independence.

Savarkar began his participation in the freedom movement at a young age, even while he was a student at Fergusson College in Pune. He was involved with revolutionary groups such as India House and the Free India Society during his time in the United Kingdom. Savarkar also authored books that advocated for revolutionary methods to gain complete independence for India. His most well-known work, Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?, remains influential to this day.

In 1911, Savarkar was arrested and sentenced to 50 years in the infamous Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Andaman and Nicobar Islands after his involvement in a revolt against the Morley-Minto reforms (Indian Councils Act 1909). He was eventually released in 1924 after several petitions, but he was barred from participating in politics as a condition of his release.

Veer Savarkar’s legacy continues to be celebrated by many, and his role in shaping India’s independence movement remains a pivotal chapter in the nation’s history.
