New Delhi [India], January 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the iconic Tamil philosopher, poet, and thinker Thiruvalluvar on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day, emphasizing that his verses embody the core of Tamil culture and India’s philosophical heritage.
“On Thiruvalluvar Day, we remember one of our land’s greatest philosophers, poets, and thinkers, the revered Thiruvalluvar. His verses reflect the essence of Tamil culture and our philosophical heritage. His teachings highlight righteousness, compassion, and justice. His timeless work, the Tirukkural, continues to inspire, offering profound insights on numerous aspects of life. We will continue striving to fulfill his vision for our society,” PM Modi shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also marked the day with a tribute, writing on X (in Tamil): “Let us honor Ayyan Thiruvalluvar, the symbol of Tamil greatness who provided a universal standard for all people of the world! Let us follow the path of the Kural and maintain an egalitarian society!”
His son and Deputy CM, Udhayanidhi Stalin, joined in the celebrations by paying homage at a portrait of Thiruvalluvar in Chennai. “On Thiruvalluvar Day, we joined Chief Minister MK Stalin this morning to pay tribute to the portrait of Ayyan Valluvar placed near the statue on Kamaraj Salai, Chennai. May the great fame of Thiruvalluvar, who offered universal wisdom to humanity, be exalted. Let us walk the path shown by the Kural to prosper humanity.”
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi also praised Thiruvalluvar in an official statement, saying, “The nation remembers with profound gratitude and utmost reverence Thiruvalluvar, the Tamil patron saint of Bharat. His unparalleled wisdom, as imparted in Tirukkural, serves as an unmatched guide for individuals and institutions alike. In the Sanatan civilisational tradition of Bharat, he taught us the sublimity of devotion to God and the profound importance of right conduct in our lives.”
Governor Ravi further highlighted that Thiruvalluvar’s teachings are a guide for everyday life, not just for a single day of celebration. “Though we celebrate Thiruvalluvar Day today, his wisdom remains with us every day,” he added, thanking PM Modi for promoting Thiruvalluvar’s teachings globally.
Thiruvalluvar Day, observed annually on January 15 in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as part of the Pongal festivities, honors the enduring legacy of Thiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural, a collection of couplets offering guidance on life, ethics, and governance.
