MGR’s Life and Legacy
MGR, born Marudur Gopala Menon Ramachandran on January 17, 1917, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, was the son of Maradhur Gopala Menon and Satyabhama, Nairs from Kerala. He transitioned from a successful film career to politics, becoming a celebrated leader of the people.
His acting career began with the 1936 film Sathi Leelavathi, directed by Ellis R. Dungan. MGR rose to fame with the 1954 film Malaikkallan and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Rickshawkaran in 1972. He was also recognized with Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Actor for Adimaippenn.
In 1972, following a rift with DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, MGR established the AIADMK, which would go on to become a dominant political force in Tamil Nadu.
