New Delhi [India], December 14 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor on his 100th birth anniversary, honoring his immense contributions to Indian cinema.
In a heartfelt message on X, PM Modi expressed, “Today, we celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of the legendary Raj Kapoor, a visionary filmmaker, actor, and the eternal showman! His genius transcended generations, leaving a lasting impact on both Indian and global cinema.”
Regarded as the “greatest showman” of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor transformed the industry with his larger-than-life presence, unforgettable performances, and pioneering storytelling. From his modest beginnings in Peshawar to becoming an iconic figure in Bollywood, Kapoor’s work has inspired generations of filmmakers and actors.
PM Modi praised the timeless nature of Kapoor’s films, emphasizing how they skillfully blended artistry, emotion, and social commentary. “His films reflected the aspirations and struggles of common people,” the Prime Minister said. He also acknowledged Kapoor’s role as a cultural ambassador who brought Indian cinema to the global stage. “Generations of filmmakers and actors have so much to learn from him,” PM Modi added, expressing deep respect for Kapoor’s legacy.
Earlier, on December 10, the Kapoor family met with the Prime Minister ahead of the Raj Kapoor 100 Film Festival. Family members, including Raj Kapoor’s daughter Rima Jain, daughter-in-law Neetu Kapoor, and grandsons Ranbir Kapoor, along with other relatives, discussed the upcoming centenary celebrations. During the meeting, Kareena Kapoor Khan had a touching moment, requesting PM Modi to autograph a note for her sons, Taimur and Jeh.
Following the meeting, Kareena shared her gratitude on social media, expressing how honored the family was to be invited by PM Modi to commemorate Raj Kapoor’s extraordinary life and legacy.
The Kapoor family’s celebrations culminated in a star-studded film festival that began on the evening of December 13 in Mumbai. The festival, titled ‘Raj Kapoor 100: Celebrating the Centenary of the Greatest Showman,’ is a multi-city event running until December 15. The festival is organized by R.K. Films, the Film Heritage Foundation, and the National Film Archive of India, and will feature screenings of ten of Kapoor’s iconic films across 40 cities and 135 cinemas. Among the featured films are ‘Aag’ (1948), ‘Barsaat’ (1949), ‘Awaara’ (1951), ‘Shree 420’ (1955), ‘Jagte Raho’ (1956), ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960), ‘Sangam’ (1964), ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970), ‘Bobby’ (1973), and ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ (1985).
The festival’s opening night saw the Kapoor family, including Randhir Kapoor, Babita Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Karisma Kapoor, and Ranbir Kapoor, among others, come together to honor Raj Kapoor’s enduring influence on Indian cinema.
