PM Modi Mourns the Loss Of Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar

New Delhi [India], May 20 : India’s scientific community is in mourning following the passing of two of its most revered figures — Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, a legendary astrophysicist, and Dr. MR Srinivasan, a pioneering nuclear scientist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Dr. Narlikar, calling his death a “monumental loss” to the field of science.

“He was a luminary, especially in astrophysics. His pioneering works, especially key theoretical frameworks, will be valued by generations of researchers,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister also praised Dr. Narlikar for his commitment to science communication and education.

“He made a mark as an institution builder, grooming centres of learning and innovation for young minds. His writings have gone a long way in making science accessible to common citizens. Condolences to his family and friends in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he added.

The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) confirmed Dr. Narlikar’s passing at the age of 86 in Pune.

“Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, an internationally renowned Indian astrophysicist, a visionary, and a passionate science communicator, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Pune on May 20, 2025,” IUCAA stated on X.

Dr. Narlikar was the founding director of IUCAA, established in 1988 under the invitation of the University Grants Commission. He led the institution until his retirement in 2003 and also served as President of the Cosmology Commission of the International Astronomical Union (1994–1997).

Since 1999, he spearheaded a unique multi-institutional project sampling air from the stratosphere to study possible extraterrestrial microorganisms, reinforcing his lifelong curiosity and commitment to space sciences.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to Dr. MR Srinivasan, calling his death a “significant loss” for India’s nuclear energy sector.

“His visionary leadership led to the development of 18 nuclear power units. His technical brilliance and unwavering service have left a lasting legacy in India’s nuclear energy landscape,” Kharge wrote on X.

A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, Dr. Srinivasan played a key role in advancing India’s civilian nuclear program. His strategic and technical contributions were instrumental in shaping the country’s energy self-reliance.

As the nation grieves these two monumental losses, their legacies — in cosmology, nuclear energy, scientific education, and public outreach — will continue to inspire future generations.
