PM Modi Makes Historic Visit To Croatia, Signs Key Agreements To Deepen Bilateral Ties

Zagreb [Croatia], June 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković held delegation-level talks in Zagreb on Wednesday, marking a significant moment in India-Croatia relations. This is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, which the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called a milestone in the evolving India-EU Strategic Partnership.

The leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions across multiple sectors, including trade, defence, science and technology, space cooperation, and cultural ties. According to the MEA, both sides recognized untapped potential in areas such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and ports.

The talks also highlighted the growing appeal of Indian culture, Indology, and Yoga in Croatia. Ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21, PM Modi extended his greetings to yoga enthusiasts in the country.

MEA Secretary (West) Tanmay Lal announced the signing of four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs):

  1. Cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors
  2. Science and technology collaboration
  3. A new cultural exchange program
  4. Extension of the Hindi Chair at the University of Zagreb until 2030

“The leaders welcomed the signing of these MoUs as a step forward in strengthening people-to-people and academic ties,” said Lal.

On the trade front, PM Modi and PM Plenković emphasized the need to enhance bilateral trade and strengthen supply chain resilience. Both leaders expressed support for the early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement to promote economic cooperation.

Regional and global issues were also discussed, with counter-terrorism emerging as a key topic. PM Modi thanked Croatia for its solidarity following the recent terror attacks in Pahalgam, India.

Another notable outcome was the reaffirmation of the India-Croatia Startup Bridge Initiative, launched in 2021. Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies such as AI, green tech, and robotics. A long-term Defence Cooperation Plan is also in development, focusing on military training, exchanges, and defence industry partnerships.

Prime Minister Modi also offered India’s expertise in space research and port development. He invited Croatian businesses to explore opportunities under India’s Sagarmala Project, which focuses on port modernization and coastal zone development.

“Our centuries-old cultural relations are the foundation of our mutual goodwill,” said PM Modi. “We are committed to further strengthening these ties through extended academic and cultural collaboration.”

He concluded by expressing appreciation for Croatia’s hospitality and noted that both nations are guided by common values such as democracy, pluralism, and the rule of law. “It is a happy coincidence that the people of both India and Croatia have entrusted us with a third consecutive term in office,” he remarked.
