New Delhi [India]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Russia to attend the May 9 Victory Day Parade at Moscow’s Red Square, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russian news agency TASS reported on Wednesday, citing a source in military circles.
High Probability of Modi’s Visit
According to a military source quoted by TASS, PM Modi’s visit has a “high probability.”
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning a visit to the May 9 parade in Moscow. It is highly likely that it will take place,” the source said.
The report also mentioned that discussions are underway regarding the participation of an Indian Armed Forces ceremonial unit in the parade. If confirmed, the unit would arrive at least a month in advance for rehearsals.
Global Participation and Diplomatic Significance
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that many invited countries have confirmed their participation in the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow.
Russian President’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov also emphasized that foreign leaders from beyond the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) have been invited, expressing Russia’s willingness to host all foreign dignitaries who recognize the significance of Victory Day.
Strengthening Indo-Russia Relations Amid Global Developments
PM Modi last visited Russia in October 2023 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan under Russia’s chairmanship.
The potential visit comes at a time when peace talks between the US and Russia regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict are being discussed, with the first round of negotiations held in Riyadh earlier this month. During previous engagements, PM Modi has advocated for peace, engaging in discussions with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Further updates on Modi’s participation and India’s military involvement in the parade are expected soon.
