Alipurduar (West Bengal) [India], May 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a ₹1010 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in West Bengal’s Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts. The project is a significant step towards expanding clean and affordable energy access in eastern India.
The initiative will supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households, as well as more than 100 commercial and industrial establishments. It will also provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to the transport sector through the construction of around 19 CNG stations, aligned with the Minimum Work Program (MWP) targets set by the Government of India.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized India’s growing strength in the energy sector:
“Today, our country is rapidly progressing towards an energy-based economy. The city gas distribution network has reached more than 520 districts. CNG has transformed transportation by reducing pollution, improving public health, and cutting fuel expenses.”
The Prime Minister noted that over 31 crore households now have LPG connections and that the vision of gas in every home is becoming a reality.
He added,
“You all know about the Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project, a revolutionary step in building a gas-based economy. With this project, the gas pipeline has now reached Eastern India.”
Modi also highlighted how these developments are fostering job creation and stimulating gas-based industries, contributing to the vision of an India where energy is cheap, clean, and accessible to all.
Following the event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Bihar in the evening and Uttar Pradesh tomorrow as part of his ongoing outreach and development initiatives.
