JEWAR, UTTAR PRADESH — Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar on Saturday, March 28, 2026. Marking a milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure, the airport is set to become the primary international gateway for Western Uttar Pradesh and a critical relief valve for Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

1. Capacity and Connectivity
Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the airport aims to transform the regional economy:
- Initial Phase: Capable of handling 12 million passengers annually.
- Future Expansion: Once fully completed across all phases, capacity is projected to scale up to 70 million passengers per year.
- Multi-Modal Hub: The facility is designed to integrate seamlessly with road, rail, and metro networks, including the Yamuna Expressway and upcoming regional rapid transit links.

2. World-Class Infrastructure
The airport is equipped to handle the world’s largest commercial aircraft:
- The Runway: A 3,900-metre strip designed for wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777-300ER.
- All-Weather Operations: Features advanced Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and sophisticated airfield lighting to ensure smooth take-offs and landings during heavy fog or low visibility.
- Sustainability: Built with a net-zero emissions target, the terminal incorporates rainwater harvesting, renewable energy sources, and extensive use of natural light.

3. Design: Modernity Meets Heritage
The terminal’s architecture serves as a tribute to Indian culture and regional aesthetics:
- Cultural Motifs: Design elements are inspired by the ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar.
- Regional Style: The structure features haveli-style courtyards, lattice screens (jaalis), and the use of local materials and art to provide a distinct “sense of place.”

4. Economic Impact and Catchment
The “Jewar Effect” is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs and travel time for a vast catchment area:
- Primary Cities: Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Mathura, and Agra.
- Reach: The airport’s 120-minute travel-time radius extends to parts of Haryana, including Sonipat, Jhajjar, and Rewari.
- Investment: Phase 1 was completed at an estimated cost of ₹11,200 crore, representing one of the largest greenfield investments in the country.
