Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of India’s new criminal laws, replacing colonial-era statutes, during a program in Chandigarh. He stated that the purpose of the old British-designed laws was to oppress and enslave Indians, whereas the new legal framework underlines the essence of democracy: “Of the People, By the People, For the People.”
Addressing the successful implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, PM Modi said:
“These laws were the means of the British oppression and exploitation. Unfortunately, for decades after independence, our laws revolved around the same penal code and mindset. Small changes were made, but the character remained intact. Why should we continue with laws made for slaves in an independent country? Our Nyaya Sahita strengthens the spirit of democracy.”
Comprehensive Input in New Laws
The Prime Minister emphasized the meticulous effort and broad consultations involved in drafting the laws. He expressed gratitude to the judiciary, civil society, and legal institutions for their contributions:
“These laws contain suggestions and guidance from Chief Justices of India, High Court judges, judicial academics, law institutes, and civil society members. They debated and discussed challenges faced by the judicial system over seven decades, testing each law on practical and futuristic parameters,” he said.
PM Modi thanked the Supreme Court, judges, and High Courts for their support in creating a transparent and efficient legal framework.
Historic Overhaul of India’s Legal System
The new criminal laws, implemented nationwide on July 1, 2024, aim to modernize India’s legal system to address contemporary challenges like cybercrime and organized crime. These reforms are a significant step towards a transparent and efficient judicial process, aligning with the ideals of India’s Constitution.
“This is a concrete effort toward fulfilling the ideals envisioned by our Constitution. I urge everyone to witness the live demonstrations showcasing the application of these laws. I extend my best wishes to the nation on the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam,” the Prime Minister concluded.
The initiative symbolizes India’s move towards a Vikshit Bharat (Developed India) and a judicial system designed for a democratic and progressive society.
