PM Modi Hails Bodoland’s CEM Cup as Symbol of Youth Empowerment and Unity Through Football

New Delhi [India], June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 123rd edition of his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, praised the transformative impact of sports in Assam’s Bodoland region, spotlighting the massive success and social significance of the Bodoland CEM Cup football tournament.

With over 3,700 teams and nearly 70,000 participants—including a significant number of girls—the tournament has evolved into a celebration of unity, talent, and hope, said the Prime Minister. “Imagine the hills glowing with the morning sun, cheers echoing across the field, and the youth playing with full passion—this is the new face of Bodoland,” PM Modi said, painting a vivid picture of the vibrant sporting culture.

He described Bodoland as a region undergoing a remarkable transformation, with sports—especially football—serving as a powerful force for change. “Bodoland today stands out in the country with a new identity. The energy and confidence of its youth are visible most prominently on the football field,” he said.

Organised by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the CEM Cup is held at various levels—from villages to the council—ensuring broad participation and accessibility across the region. According to the official tournament website, the initiative aims to use football as a tool to promote unity, peace, and youth development in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The PM acknowledged the achievements of footballers from Bodoland who have risen to national fame, such as Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, and Manbir Basumatari. “These names represent a new generation that has propelled Bodoland to national recognition,” he said.

Importantly, the Prime Minister highlighted the growing participation of girls in the tournament as a key indicator of progress toward gender inclusivity in Indian sports.

Reflecting on the region’s past struggles, PM Modi noted that today, Bodoland’s youth are dreaming big with a spirit of self-reliance. “There was a time when this place was known for its struggles. Today, those struggles are being replaced with dreams and determination,” he remarked.

He also emphasized the link between physical fitness and life success, encouraging citizens to adopt healthier habits. “To expand our capabilities, we must first focus on fitness. Reduce 10% oil in your food to cut down obesity. When you’re fit, you’re more super-hit in life,” he said with a smile.

PM Modi’s message reinforced the idea that sports can be a catalyst for empowerment, community-building, and national pride, as Bodoland continues to inspire the rest of the country with its transformation.
