PM Modi Dedicates Three Made-In-India Naval Ships At Mumbai Dockyard

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval ships — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — during a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“It is for the first time that the tri-commissioning of a destroyer, frigate, and submarine was being done,” stated PM Modi.

According to the Ministry of Defence, INS Surat is a destroyer, INS Nilgiri a frigate, and INS Vaghsheer a submarine.

“This historic tri-commissioning reflected India’s rich maritime legacy and commitment to self-reliant defence under Aatmanirbhar Bharat. These vessels, built indigenously, enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities and strengthen India’s role in the Indian Ocean Region,” the ministry’s social media platform noted.

PM Modi underscored the vital role of maritime nations like India in shaping global security, economics, and geopolitics. He highlighted the importance of protecting territorial waters, ensuring freedom of navigation, and securing trade routes for economic growth and energy security. He also called for vigilance against terrorism, arms, and drug trafficking in the region.

On Army Day, the Prime Minister saluted the bravery and sacrifices of India’s soldiers. He also credited Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for giving the Indian Navy “new strength and vision” during his reign.

Modi expressed pride in the indigenous construction of all three naval platforms and congratulated the Indian Navy, stakeholders, and citizens for this achievement. “Today’s program links our glorious heritage with our future aspirations,” he said.

The Ministry of Defence shared that PM Modi referenced India’s rich history of maritime trade, naval defence, and shipbuilding. “Today’s India is emerging as a major maritime power in the world,” the PM remarked.

Maritime Heritage and Advanced Technology
The Ministry of Defence revealed that INS Nilgiri represents the maritime prowess of the Chola dynasty, while INS Surat reflects Gujarat’s historical connections with West Asia. INS Vaghsheer aims to enhance India’s security and progress.

“India is today recognised as a reliable and responsible partner globally, especially in the Global South,” said the Prime Minister, stressing India’s commitment to an open, secure, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific Region. He cited the SAGAR initiative (Security And Growth for All in the Region) as central to India’s
