PM Modi Congratulates Mark Carney On Election As Canadian PM, Hails Shared Democratic Values

New Delhi [India] : Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm congratulations to Mark J. Carney on his election as the new Prime Minister of Canada, applauding the Liberal Party’s electoral victory.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote,

“Congratulations Mark J Carney on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory. India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people.”

Canadian broadcaster CTV News projected a win for Carney and the Liberals in what was described as one of the most unpredictable elections in Canadian history. Carney succeeds Justin Trudeau, who stepped down after losing the confidence of his party.

This election marked Canada’s 45th federal poll, featuring a tight race among Liberal leader Carney, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP’s Jagmeet Singh, Bloc Quebecois’ Yves-Francois Blanchet, and Green Party co-leader Jonathan Pedneault.

Carney, a former central banker with strong economic credentials, called for an early election after dissolving Parliament. He framed the vote as a critical response to “the most significant crisis of his lifetime” — citing increasing tariff threats and sovereignty challenges posed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who controversially referred to Canada as the “51st state of the United States.”

Despite mounting geopolitical pressure, the Liberal Party entered the election with a modest four-point lead, according to a Global News–IPSOS poll.

In contrast to his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, whose term saw strained ties with India following allegations concerning NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Mark Carney has expressed intentions to reset bilateral relations. Notably, Carney extended condolences following the recent Pahalgam terror attack in India, signaling a diplomatic shift and a commitment to stronger India-Canada ties.
