New Delhi (India), July 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on his nomination to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting his significant contributions to India’s foreign policy and G20 Presidency.
Shringla is among four eminent individuals nominated to the Rajya Sabha under Article 80(1)(a) of the Constitution, replacing members who recently retired. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi praised Shringla as a “diplomat, intellectual and strategic thinker,” and expressed confidence that his “unique perspectives will greatly enrich Parliamentary proceedings.”
Shringla has served as India’s Ambassador to the United States and Bangladesh, and held the post of Foreign Secretary from January 2020 to April 2022.
Reacting to the nomination, Shringla expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the President. “Even after retirement, I have never stopped my endeavours in service of the country… I will continue to work for the people and strengthen India’s global position,” he posted on X.
Three other distinguished figures were also nominated:
- Ujjwal Nikam, senior public prosecutor known for leading the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial.
- C. Sadanandan Master, a social worker and educationist from Kerala with decades of service.
- Meenakshi Jain, historian and academic known for her contributions to Indian civilisation studies.
PM Modi also congratulated the other three nominees on social media, applauding their national service across fields of law, education, and historical research.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the official notification confirming these nominations.
