Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Monday, strongly denounced the terrible event in which a lawyer threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a Supreme Court hearing. PM Modi called the incident “utterly condemnable” and said it “has angered every Indian.” He further stressed that this kind of behavior has no place in a civilized society.
PM Modi posted on X (previously Twitter) that he had talked to CJI Gavai after the event and praised how calm he was.
Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.

I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice…
“Talked to the Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. Everyone in India is upset by the onslaught on him earlier today in the Supreme Court. There is no room in our culture for such terrible behavior. It is completely wrong. I liked how calm Justice Gavai was in such a scenario. The Prime Minister wrote, “It shows how much he cares about justice and the spirit of our Constitution.”
What Went On Inside the Supreme Court
On Monday morning, a bench led by CJI BR Gavai was hearing lawyers talk about cases when the incident happened.
Eyewitnesses say that a 71-year-old lawyer named Rakesh Kishore suddenly walked up to the dais, took off his shoe, and tried to throw it at the Chief Justice. Security guards stepped in right away to stop the attack and take the lawyer out of the courtroom.
Kishore said, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (We will not allow any disrespect to Sanatan) as they took him away.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has already taken away the lawyer’s license to practice law, calling the behavior a significant violation of professional conduct and courtroom decorum.
The Political and Legal Community Responds
Politicians from all sides and lawyers spoke out against the attack on the Chief Justice, calling it an attack on India’s fundamental values.
Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress parliamentary party, said she was very upset and stood by CJI Gavai. She called the attack “an assault not just on him but on our Constitution as well.”
“No words can fully condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India at the Supreme Court itself. This is an attack on him and our Constitution as well. “Chief Justice Gavai has been very kind, but the whole country must stand with him in a deep sense of pain and anger,” her statement said.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition, also spoke out against the attack, calling it “an assault on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution.”
The Congress MP commented on X, “This kind of hate has no place in our country and must be condemned.”
Kapil Sibal, a former Union Law Minister and senior lawyer, called the incident “uncivilized behavior” and said it should be publicly condemned.
Sibal remarked on X, “Everyone must publicly condemn the uncivilized behavior of a member of the Supreme Court Bar because it is an affront to the majesty of the court.”
An Attack on the Dignity of the Judiciary
The extraordinary event has caused a lot of anger in India, with many people stressing the need of respecting the courts. CJI Gavai stayed calm during the incident, but both legal experts and political leaders have urged for more protections to make sure that court procedures are safe and sacred.
