Manoj Kumar, a towering figure in Indian cinema renowned for his patriotic roles and timeless contributions, breathed his last at 4:03 AM at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since February 21 for multiple health complications. The cause of death was cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction, compounded by his prolonged battle with decompensated liver cirrhosis.

🕯️ A Nation Mourns

In a heartfelt tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar made his entry into Hindi cinema in the late 1950s. But it was during the 1960s and 70s that he rose to national prominence for his portrayals of idealistic, patriotic characters—earning him the title “Bharat Kumar.”

His landmark performances in films such as:

  • Shaheed (1965) – as freedom fighter Bhagat Singh
  • Upkar (1967) – his directorial debut
  • Purab Aur Paschim (1970)
  • Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)

not only captivated audiences but became defining narratives of post-independence India, celebrating sacrifice, duty, and unity.

🏅 Honours & Achievements

Throughout his illustrious career, Manoj Kumar earned several major accolades, including:

  • Padma Shri (1992)
  • Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015) – the highest honor in Indian cinema
  • 7 Filmfare Awards across categories including Best Actor and Best Director

He was also celebrated for using his craft to tell stories that blended entertainment with national consciousness, a rare feat in the world of popular cinema.

🗳️ Beyond the Silver Screen

In his later years, Manoj Kumar stepped away from filmmaking and entered public life, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2004 general elections. Though not active in mainstream politics, his association reflected his lifelong commitment to the nation’s progress.

🎞️ The End of an Era

Manoj Kumar’s passing marks more than the loss of an actor—it signifies the end of an era defined by cinema that stirred patriotism and social awareness. His films continue to resonate with generations of Indians, keeping his legacy alive in every frame.

He is survived by his family, who have announced that his last rites will be performed on Saturday, April 5.
