On Saturday night, there was a deadly stampede at a political gathering in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a financial assistance package for the victims.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will distribute ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of each person who died in the tragic event. Also, anybody who were hurt in the rush would get ₹50,000 as compensation.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay (also known as Thalapathy Vijay), had a political gathering when the incident happened. New estimates say that about 39 people died in the rush, including women and children. More than 80 more were hurt.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi used social media to say how sad he was about the deaths. “The horrible event that happened at a political gathering in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is really sad. I am thinking of the families that have lost loved ones. Sending them strength throughout this hard time. The Prime Minister wrote on X, “Praying for a quick recovery for everyone who was hurt.”
The accident happened when huge crowds were gathering for the campaign, and witnesses said that too many people and a rapid surge caused the tragedy. The state government, which is led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has also said that the families of the dead will get ₹10 lakh in compensation. They have also set up a commission, headed by a retired High Court judge, to look into what happened during the stampede.
