Gramado (Rio Grande do Sul) [Brazil]: A devastating plane crash in the southern Brazilian city of Gramado on Sunday claimed the lives of at least 10 people and injured over a dozen, according to CNN.
The small aircraft collided with several buildings shortly after takeoff from the local airport, causing significant damage. The Civil Defence of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed that 17 individuals were injured, with many suffering from smoke inhalation. Two of the injured are in serious condition, having sustained severe burns.
According to the National Civil Defence, the crash began when the plane struck the chimney of a building, subsequently hitting a residential home and crashing into a furniture store. Debris from the collision also damaged a nearby inn.
Video footage captured the chaotic aftermath, showing flames and thick smoke rising from the wreckage as debris scattered across the crash site. Overcast skies and fog were visible, adding to speculation about weather conditions contributing to the incident.
Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite indicated that initial assessments suggest there were no survivors among the plane’s occupants. While preliminary reports state that the aircraft was carrying 10 people, it remains unclear if all fatalities were passengers or if there were casualties on the ground.
The crash has sent shockwaves through Gramado, a picturesque resort town renowned for its holiday attractions, particularly during the Christmas season. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy.
