Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), July 6: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal met with representatives of the Jammu-Kashmir Fruits and Vegetable Processing and Integrated Cold Chain Association (JKPICCA) in Srinagar on Sunday to discuss strategies for advancing industrial development in the cold chain and agro-processing sectors. The talks aimed at strengthening J&K’s agricultural economy and boosting exports.
“Discussions were held on strategies to sustain industrial development in the cold chain and agro-processing sectors, which are extremely important for strengthening J&K’s agricultural economy and boosting exports,” Goyal posted on X after the meeting.
Earlier in the day, addressing the FTII: Traders Conclave – 2025 in Srinagar, Goyal responded to concerns over the high Goods and Services Tax (GST) on handicrafts and handlooms. He promised to explore reducing the GST rate on these products from 12% to 5% to promote local artisans and industries.
“I have suggested that they submit an application to the Finance Ministry and me so that we can explore what relief can be provided,” Goyal said, adding, “We will make efforts to find a way forward in this regard.”
The Minister also announced plans for a Centre of Excellence for Packaging and Design in J&K, directing officials to collaborate with the Indian Institute of Packaging to launch a project focused on quality packaging solutions.
Additionally, discussions included establishing a Centre of Excellence dedicated to storage technology, cold chain infrastructure, and nurturing startups in the agro-processing sector.
To promote green exports, Goyal said he would speak with NTPC and the Solar Energy Corporation about setting up solar lighting or power generation facilities to help producers market their products as eco-friendly, potentially fetching higher prices abroad.
Goyal also held discussions with the MSME Development Forum, Jammu-Kashmir, to gather suggestions on promoting local enterprises and creating employment opportunities.
