Pet Health Alert: Two Companies Recall Dog Food and Treats Over Potential Salmonella Contamination

Two major pet food producers, Foodynamics and Raw Bistro Pet Fare, have issued voluntary recalls for several of their dog food and treat products due to the potential presence of Salmonella bacteria. The recalls were announced after routine testing by the FDA indicated possible contamination in certain lots.

Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) poses a health risk to pets consuming the contaminated product, as well as to humans handling the food, especially if hands are not thoroughly washed afterward. No illnesses in pets or humans have been reported in connection with these recalls to date, but consumers are strongly urged to stop using the affected products immediately.

Health Warning: Symptoms of Salmonella

In Pets: Symptoms can include lethargy, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea (which may be bloody). Some pets may only show a decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Even healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Pet owners should contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled food and exhibits these symptoms.

In Humans: Symptoms typically include fever, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which may be bloody. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can lead to more severe conditions like arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis, particularly in the elderly, infants, and those with weakened immune systems. Individuals experiencing these symptoms after handling the product should contact their healthcare provider.

Consumer Action

Customers who have purchased any of the recalled products are advised to:

  1. Do not feed the product to pets or any other animals.
  2. Dispose of the product safely in a sealed trash bag to prevent access by children, pets, or wildlife.
  3. Clean and sanitize all pet food bowls, scoops, storage containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled food.
  4. Wash hands thoroughly after handling the pet food or any exposed surfaces.

For full refunds or questions, consumers are directed to contact the respective companies.
