Washington DC [US]: Fans of ‘Peaky Blinders’ might get to experience the gritty world of Tommy Shelby on the big screen before the movie’s release on Netflix, according to the show’s creator and screenwriter Steven Knight. In an interview with Playlist, Knight expressed his desire for a theatrical release of the highly anticipated spin-off film, reported Deadline.
Big Screen Plans for Peaky Blinders Spin-Off
Steven Knight, who has been the creative force behind the multi-award-winning gangster saga, revealed that filming for the spin-off was wrapped up on December 13th. He also highlighted the star-studded cast, including Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, Cillian Murphy, and Stephen Graham.
“We wrapped (filming) on December 13th. We’ve got Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and obviously Cillian Murphy and Stephen Graham. And I have to say, it is mind-blowingly good,” Knight shared.
“I really want the Peaky fans who have been a big part of this to be watching it all together in one building. The communication has all been virtual, but I do want this to be in cinemas so that people can sit there together and watch this thing happen,” he added.
Netflix has not yet made any official announcements regarding the film’s release strategy.
Directed by Tom Harper: A Continuation of the Birmingham Saga
The spin-off movie is directed by Tom Harper, known for directing several episodes of the series. According to Variety, the film is described as:
“An epic continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga, set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s.”
Production for the movie began in September, with fans catching glimpses of Cillian Murphy back as the iconic Tommy Shelby. Knight not only wrote the script but is also co-producing the film alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley. The executive producers include Tom Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason.
Cillian Murphy’s Excitement for the Spin-Off
Expressing his excitement, Cillian Murphy earlier stated:
“This is one for the fans,” reported Variety.
Murphy, who gained global fame for his portrayal of Tommy Shelby, recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, a performance that won him an Academy Award.
The Future of the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Franchise
While the TV series concluded with Season 6 in 2022, Knight has hinted that the spin-off film might not be the end of the franchise. He suggested the possibility of more seasons in the future, ensuring that the Peaky Blinders universe might continue to expand.
