Fans of the strange, action-packed superhero show Peacemaker may now relax. HBO Max has officially released Season 2, and the new episodes will continue the story of Christopher Smith. The show is now part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU), which adds a new twist.
On Thursday, August 21, the first episode, “The Ties That Grind,” came out. The show will not be released all at once; instead, a new episode will air every Thursday at 9 PM ET/PT until the finale in October.
A New Beginning for Peacemaker
The first season was based on the DCEU movie The Suicide Squad, however the second season takes place after the events of the upcoming DCU movie Superman. This “soft reboot” of the universe implies that Peacemaker will face new problems in a world where he is seen as a real superhero, but he will still have a “rough memory” of everything that happened in the first season and The Suicide Squad.
The events of Superman and the fallout from Project Butterfly in the first season have a big impact on the plot of the new season. Some people will consider Peacemaker as a public enemy, especially Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), who is now the head of A.R.G.U.S. and wants revenge for his son’s death at Peacemaker’s hands. The season will follow Peacemaker as he tries to make up for his previous mistakes and deal with a new world that gives him a “perfect” second chance at life.
James Gunn’s ongoing work
James Gunn, the creator and director, goes back to direct some important episodes of the second season, such as the premiere, episode 6, and the season finale, episode 8. He had planned to direct all eight episodes, but because he is now co-CEO of DC Studios, he had to give up directing some of them. Gunn told CinemaBlend that the two episodes he directed later in the season were his “two favorite episodes of the season.”
