PCB Delays Pakistan Women’s Team Coach Appointment

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is taking a cautious approach in appointing the new head coach for the national women’s team after their disappointing performance in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup, won by India.

The team, led by Fatima Sana, finished at the bottom of the eight-team tournament, suffering four losses and having three matches washed out by rain. Consequently, the PCB decided last week against extending the contract of former head coach, Muhammad Wasim.

Wahab Riaz Speculation Rebutted

Initial speculation suggested that former fast bowler Wahab Riaz might be appointed as either a consultant or the new head coach. However, the PCB quickly issued a rebuttal to these reports.

A PCB official clarified, “Wahab has already been working as a consultant in the PCB with various teams but has been given no new assignment as yet.” While Riaz has expressed interest in taking up the challenge of coaching the women’s team, sources indicate he would only be considered if other avenues are exhausted.

Foreign Coaches and Local Options

According to a well-informed source, the PCB is currently prioritizing experienced international candidates.

Cricket Source: “The PCB was in negotiations with two foreign coaches to work with the women’s team but nothing had been finalised.”

Should talks with the foreign coaches fall through, the board will turn its attention to local expertise. The foremost candidate among the domestic options is former national women’s team captain, Bismah Maroof.

Maroof, a veteran player with extensive leadership experience, is seen as a strong choice who could provide stability and guidance to the struggling side.

The Pakistan women’s team finished last in the World Cup, even behind Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, in a campaign marred by heavy defeats and frustrating rain abandonments in Colombo. The PCB remains under pressure to secure a high-calibre coach to reverse the team’s fortunes ahead of future international events.
