Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], December 20: Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia was presented with the prestigious Spirit of Cinema award at the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) on Friday. The recognition came in honor of her groundbreaking achievement at the Cannes Film Festival, where her film All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix. This victory marked Kapadia as the first Indian filmmaker in 30 years to feature in Cannes’ main competition section.
Along with its Grand Prix win, All We Imagine as Light has earned nominations for two Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards 2025. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the award to Kapadia, acknowledging her achievement and the significance of her film.
During his address, Chief Minister Vijayan praised IFFK for its inclusive approach and commitment to feminist politics. He highlighted the presence of over 40 films directed by women at the festival and the special tribute to PK Rosy, the festival’s signature film. He emphasized how the event served as a platform for solidarity with the oppressed and those enduring hardship. The packed screenings reflected the overwhelming enthusiasm and support from audiences.
The 29th IFFK, which began on December 13 at Thiruvananthapuram’s Nishagandhi Auditorium, wrapped up on December 20.
Regarding her film, Kapadia shared insights into All We Imagine As Light, which tells the story of Prabha, a troubled nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate who seeks intimacy with her boyfriend. Their journey to a beach town allows them to confront their emotions and desires.
The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam in pivotal roles. It is an official Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos (France), Chalk & Cheese, and Another Birth (India).
