Sydney [Australia], January 2: Australia captain Pat Cummins discussed the inclusion of all-rounder Beau Webster in the playing eleven for the upcoming Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, stating that it was “time for a freshen up” in the squad.
In a surprise move, Australia included 31-year-old Webster in the playing eleven for his debut, replacing all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. This marks Webster’s first appearance in the ongoing series, following Sam Konstas’ impressive performance in the Melbourne Test.
Cummins explained that Marsh had not been able to deliver the expected performances with either the bat or the ball during the series. He emphasized that it felt like the right moment for a change, with Webster having been part of the squad for several Tests and providing strong support.
“Beau has been in the squad for a few Tests now. Mitchell Marsh hasn’t quite got the runs or the wickets he would have liked, so it felt like it was time for a freshen up,” Cummins said. “It’s unfortunate for Marsh, as we know the value he brings, but it’s a good week for Beau to get his opportunity.”
Webster will become the 469th player to represent Australia in Tests. Despite Marsh’s earlier minor back issues, there were no fitness concerns, but his recent form led to the change. Webster, the preferred sixth batter, has been in good form with both bat and ball, including a strong showing in the Australia A vs. India A series, where he took six wickets and scored an unbeaten 46*.
Australia secured an 184-run victory over India in the Melbourne Test, taking a 2-1 lead in the series, which also ended India’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship Final. Australia leads 2-1 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Australia’s XI for the Sydney Test: Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (WK), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland.
