Pat Cummins Doubtful For Ashes Opener Against England In Perth Amid Back Injury Recovery

Australia captain Pat Cummins has admitted he remains a doubtful starter for the Ashes 2025 series opener against England in Perth next month, as he continues recovery from a back stress injury that has sidelined him for over three months.

Speaking to domestic media on Monday, Cummins said he’s making gradual progress but is not yet confident of returning in time for the first Test, which begins on November 21.

“I wouldn’t put a percentage on it, but I’d say probably less likely than likely,” Cummins said. “I’ve still got a bit of time.”

The 32-year-old pacer, who last played during Australia’s 3–0 series sweep of the West Indies in the Caribbean in July, has not bowled competitively since. He revealed that while he has resumed physical training, a full return to bowling is still a few weeks away.

“Each session feels better and better. We get into slight bowling prep next week,” Cummins said. “I’m probably a couple of weeks away before I actually put on my spikes and bowl on the turf.”

Ashes Schedule and Recovery Timeline

The five-match Ashes series kicks off in Perth on November 21, followed by a day-night Test in Brisbane from December 4, before moving to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney for the remaining matches.

Cummins emphasized that his immediate focus is on ensuring long-term fitness rather than rushing back prematurely.

“The immediate goal is to make sure I’m giving myself a chance to be right for as much of the series as possible. It’s really too early to make big decisions,” he said.

“With these things, it’s pretty hard to go from not bowling at all to suddenly playing five Tests. The first step is trying to give us a shot at being fit, and then we’ll work it out a bit closer.”

The Australian skipper also confirmed he is no longer in pain and is steadily increasing his workload.

“A few of the symptoms hung around for a little bit longer than I would have liked, but they’re all gone now,” he added.

Possible Replacement and Team Plans

If Cummins is unable to take the field for the Perth Test, Scott Boland is expected to step into the pace attack, which will likely include Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Australia’s white-ball squad is currently preparing for a limited-overs series against India, featuring both ODIs and T20Is, beginning October 19 — a crucial lead-up before the Test summer.

Cummins’ absence, if confirmed, would be a significant blow for the hosts as they prepare to defend the Ashes on home soil, with the fast bowler having played a pivotal role in their 2023 triumph in England.
