New Delhi [India], March 5: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology held a meeting on Wednesday at Parliament House Annexe, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Officials from various ministries were present to discuss key matters related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact.
The meeting’s agenda included the consideration and adoption of two draft Action Taken Reports. It also featured a detailed presentation and evidence on the subject “Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Related Issues.” Representatives from key ministries, including the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and others, contributed to the discussion.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, provided insights on India’s policy position regarding AI. He emphasized that India views AI as a tool for innovation, increased productivity, and opportunities, while being mindful of potential risks and harms. He further shared that India’s approach to AI was incorporated into the G20 discussions, with a particular focus on inclusive and sustainable AI.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France, Krishnan highlighted the AI Action Summit, co-chaired by PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, where India committed to AI for public good. He also confirmed that the next AI summit will be hosted in India later this year, with the Global South expected to have significant representation.
Krishnan also discussed India’s support for the establishment of an AI foundation and its role in the AI coalition aimed at promoting sustainable development through AI aligned with environmental goals.
