New Delhi [India], December 2 : PM on Monday as opposition MPs continued their protests for the fifth consecutive day, demanding discussions on various issues. Parliamentary proceedings have been disrupted since the start of the Winter Session due to the opposition’s protests over the Adani issue, violence in Manipur, and incidents in Sambhal.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasized that opposition parties were united in wanting to discuss key issues, including a debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution. “If the government agrees to hold the debate, Parliament can function smoothly. We have had similar debates on past anniversaries, and the government should cooperate to allow Parliament to run,” Tharoor said.
KC Venugopal, another Congress MP, reiterated that the Congress was ready to participate in House proceedings, but only if the government allowed discussions on important matters. “We met with the Speaker and our demand is clear – action must be taken to run the House smoothly, with a discussion on the Constitution, as promised by the government,” he stated.
TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay also called on the ruling party to ensure the functioning of the House. He pointed out that the opposition had issues ranging from unemployment and price rises to regional matters like fertilizers, and stressed that the Adani issue should be raised in the Business Advisory Committee. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure the House runs, but the BJP appears uninterested in doing so,” he said.
Opposition MPs have been consistently calling for discussions on the Adani issue, the violence in Sambhal, and the ongoing situation in Manipur, with frequent slogan-chanting disrupting proceedings.
The Winter Session of Parliament began on November 25, but disruptions have led to early adjournments. The session is scheduled to continue until December 20.
