NEW DELHI – On Monday, July 28, 2025, during the present Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Lok Sabha will have a long and important debate over “Operation Sindoor,” India’s military reaction to the Pahalgam terror incident on April 22, 2025. The Lower House is slated to have a 16-hour discussion, which will be followed by a 16-hour debate in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, announced a special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and “Operation Sindoor.” He said that at first, opposition members wanted to talk about several problems, but they unanimously agreed that the debate on “Operation Sindoor” should come first. Even before the Monsoon Session began, the Congress and other opposition parties had sent the administration a letter asking for this discussion.
Important Points from the ‘Operation Sindoor’ Parliament Debate:
The Lok Sabha will spend 16 hours talking about it on Monday, and the Rajya Sabha will do the same on Tuesday.
Trump’s Ceasefire Claims: The Opposition is likely to be quite upset at the government’s explanation of President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he helped bring about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Opposition parties have brought this topic up many times before.
Important Government Speakers: Rajnath Singh, the Minister of Defence, is set to start the debate in the Lok Sabha. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey are all scheduled to be there with him.
Possible Involvement of the Prime Minister: Reports say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may exploit this long-awaited debate to put more pressure on the Opposition. There has been no formal confirmation yet that he will be there.
TDP Participation: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi are also anticipated to take part in the discussion. Their party will have 30 minutes to share its thoughts.
Voices from the Opposition: Some of the most important leaders who will speak from the Opposition benches include Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition; Gaurav Gogoi and Manish Tewari from the Congress; Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party; Supriya Sule from the NCP; and Abhishek Banerjee, an MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Meeting of the Opposition Strategy: Before the debate, the floor leaders of the Opposition INDIA bloc will meet at 10 AM on Monday to plan for the second week of the monsoon session. They have always wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be there for the debate, but he was on a trip to two countries last week.
Rijiju’s Plea: Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the Opposition “not to stall the House” because the first week of the Monsoon Session was full of adjournments and disruptions. He stressed that “It’s a loss for the country if Parliament doesn’t function.”
NDA Delegations: Leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) who were part of multi-party delegations that went to different countries after “Operation Sindoor” are also expected to take part in the debate and talk about what they learned from their diplomatic work related to the strikes.
India carried out a series of precision, pre-dawn strikes on May 7, 2025, as part of “Operation Sindoor.” These strikes hit nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This was done in response to the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. India has said that these attacks were “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” and that their goal was to destroy terrorist infrastructure and stop terrorists from getting ready to attack.
