New Delhi [India], December 20 : On the final day of the Winter Session, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his disappointment over the repeated disruptions in Parliament, stating that it failed to fulfill its responsibilities and let the people of India down.
Tharoor said, “I am a very disappointed MP. Most of our MPs are disappointed. There are many important issues to discuss, such as unemployment, price rise, the situation in Manipur, and the violence in Sambhal. Unfortunately, much of the time has been wasted due to disruptions. For many of us, the only productive work was done in the Parliamentary committees. The main Parliament session did not meet its duty to the nation, and I believe we have let the people of India down. It’s very unfortunate.”
He also expressed hope that the BJP-led government would engage with the opposition to find a solution, allowing Parliament to function without disruptions in the future.
“Parliament is a platform for debate, discussion, and disagreements, but not for disruptions. There was an agreement earlier between the government and the opposition that the protests could be held outside, while work would continue inside. That worked for a couple of days, but then the situation broke down again. This is very unfortunate. I hope the government will engage with the opposition and find a solution, so we can get back to the work of the House in an objective manner,” he said.
Tharoor also expressed hope that such disruptions would not occur during the upcoming Budget session. “The Budget session is approaching, and we should ensure there is no repetition of this in February or March,” he stated.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on November 25, concluded on December 20, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being adjourned amid protests over Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. BR Ambedkar.
