Lok Sabha Passes Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024
Before adjourning, the Lok Sabha passed the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, a legislation aimed at modernizing the regulatory framework governing the responsibilities, liabilities, rights, and immunities of carriers transporting goods by sea.
The bill is set to repeal and replace the Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925, a pre-independence law that has been in place for nearly a century.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the significance of the legislation, stating:
“This bill intends to repeal and replace the 100-year-old pre-independence legislation, the Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925.”
India Closely Monitors Minority Rights in Pakistan: S. Jaishankar
During Question Hour in Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed concerns regarding the treatment of minorities in Pakistan.
He stated that India actively tracks and raises concerns on international platforms regarding crimes and atrocities committed against minorities in Pakistan, particularly the Hindu community.
Highlighting specific incidents from February 2024, Jaishankar revealed:
- 10 cases of atrocities were reported
- 7 involved abduction and forcible conversion
- 2 cases were related to abduction
- 1 case involved police action against students celebrating Holi
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to advocating for minority rights on international forums, ensuring these concerns are addressed at a global level.
With the parliament set to resume on April 1, further discussions and legislative advancements are expected in the upcoming session.
