New Delhi: Aman Sehrawat, who won a bronze medal in wrestling at the Paris Olympics, has been banned from all wrestling activities for a year by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) because he didn’t make weight at the Senior World Championships.
The 22-year-old had one of India’s best chances to win a medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg category, but he was banned from the tournament because he weighed 1.7 kg over than the limit on the day of the event.
The WFI wrote in a letter, “You are hereby suspended from all wrestling-related activities, both at the national and international level, for a period of one (1) year, effective from the date of the show-cause notice.” This choice is final and must be followed. You can’t take part in or be around any activity that WFI organizes or approves of at the national or worldwide level while you are suspended.
On September 23, 2025, the federation sent Aman a show-cause notice asking for an explanation for the mistake. The WFI Disciplinary Committee didn’t like his answer, which he sent in on September 29.
The committee said that Aman was undisciplined and unprofessional, and that as an Olympic medalist, he was required to act in the best way possible.
“You were sent to the Accumulation Camp at Poreč, Croatia, starting on August 25, 2025, which gave you enough time to keep your weight and fitness up. The WFI claimed, “You were disqualified from the Championship because you were 1.7 kg overweight, even though you reported 18 days before your scheduled bout.”
The federation also said that his not sticking to the 57 kg weight class hurt his own credibility and India’s reputation around the world. It also cost the country a chance to win a medal and money because the government had to pay for training and participation.
Also, Vinod, Virender, and Narender, who are all part of the coaching staff, were asked to explain why they didn’t keep an eye on weight management when they were getting ready for the championships.
