The Delhi Police investigation into the alleged suicide of Deepti Chaurasia (38), the daughter-in-law of pan masala baron Kamal Kishore, has intensified after her mother filed a detailed First Information Report (FIR). Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against Deepti’s husband, Arpit Chaurasia, and her mother-in-law following her death at the family’s Vasant Vihar residence on Tuesday.
Deepti was found hanging inside a room of the South West Delhi residence. Her mother’s complaint alleges a long, disturbing pattern of sustained mental and physical abuse, social isolation, and repeated humiliation, prompting her to demand a thorough probe, including a possible transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Timeline of Alleged Cruelty
The FIR outlines distressing incidents dating back more than a decade, shortly after her marriage in 2010:
- 2011 Assault: In early 2011, while Deepti was pregnant, her husband and mother-in-law allegedly dragged her from the first floor of their home and assaulted her. The in-laws reportedly apologized later, promising to change their behavior.
- Extramarital Affair Allegation: A month after giving birth to her son, Deepti allegedly discovered evidence of her husband’s extramarital affair. Her parents took her and the newborn back to Howrah, West Bengal, and she only returned to Delhi a year later after her husband provided a written assurance that he would not harm her again.
- Continued Mistreatment: Despite the assurance, the FIR states the abuse resumed after two to three years. Deepti was allegedly mistreated, maligned in social circles, excluded from family events, and frequently left alone at home. Her husband reportedly kept his phone locked with multiple passwords.
- Recent Confrontation: In April 2024, while her husband was away in Dubai, Deepti managed to open his phone and allegedly found obscene content, triggering a new confrontation upon his return.
Day of the Incident
On the morning of November 25, Deepti called her mother around 7:30 am, stating she had argued with her husband over their son’s mobile phone. Subsequent attempts by her mother to contact her went unanswered. Deepti’s mother-in-law later claimed she was at the airport, while Arpit allegedly said he was returning from the gym. Around noon, the family received a devastating call informing them Deepti had been taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have confirmed that they seized a diary from Deepti’s room, which reportedly contained entries about marital discord and a lack of love and trust in her relationship. The family lawyer, representing Kamal Kishore’s family, has publicly denied all allegations of marital discord and cruelty, stating the reports are “baseless” and that the family is fully cooperating with the investigation.
