A Pakistani citizen residing in Canada has been extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to commit acts of terrorism and supporting ISIS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed on Tuesday.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the development on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism,” he said.
The individual, identified as Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada in September 2024. He now faces charges related to a terror plot targeting Jewish communities in New York City, according to AFP.
Authorities allege that Khan planned to “travel from Canada to New York and carry out a mass shooting in support of ISIS at a Jewish Center in Brooklyn” during the fall of last year.
Planned Attack on October 7, 2024
According to officials, Khan intended to carry out the attack on October 7, 2024, marking the one-year anniversary of the Hamas-led assault on Israel that ignited the ongoing Gaza conflict.
US Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized the severity of the alleged plot:
“He planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of our Jewish community as possible, all in support of IS,” he told AFP.
Fortunately, the plot was intercepted before it could be executed.
“Thankfully, the great work of FBI teams and our partners exposed those plans and shut them down — and Khan was arrested by Canadian authorities on September 4, 2024,” Patel added.
“He has now arrived in the U.S. and will face American justice,” he said.
Patel further stressed the broader implications:
“This case is a reminder of the constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world — as well as the disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities. Your FBI will continue to be on guard and work around the clock to counter them.”
According to the U.S. Justice Department, the alleged plot was foiled when Khan shared his intentions with individuals he believed to be co-conspirators — who turned out to be undercover law enforcement officers, AFP reported.
