Pakistan Increases Petrol And Diesel Prices Again, Opposition Criticizes Move

The Pakistan government has increased petrol and diesel prices for the next fortnight, with a significant hike of PKR 7 per litre in diesel prices, ARY News reported.

According to an official notification, petrol prices have been raised by PKR 1, bringing the new price to PKR 257.13 per litre. Meanwhile, diesel prices have surged by PKR 7 per litre, setting the new price at PKR 267.95 per litre.

This comes after the government previously increased fuel prices on January 1, raising high-speed diesel by PKR 2.96 per litre and petrol by 56 paisas per litre. The revised rates at that time were PKR 252.66 per litre for petrol and PKR 258.34 per litre for diesel.

ARY News further reported that the government has not reduced the petroleum levy, which has significantly contributed to the price hike. Over the past month and a half, petroleum prices have increased by PKR 12.14 per litre.

The move has sparked strong opposition, with critics arguing that it will further strain inflation-hit citizens. In November last year, opposition parties, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), condemned the government’s fuel price policies.

Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman called the increase “shameful” and criticized the government’s failure to provide relief to the public and industries. He also pointed out that while international fuel prices are decreasing, Pakistan continues to face price hikes, Geo News reported.
