Asaduddin Owaisi, the head of AIMIM, has strongly criticized the impending India vs. Pakistan match in the Asia Cup, saying that the government shouldn’t play against a country that is known to support terrorism. On Saturday, Owaisi talked to the press and asked the BJP to explain the match. He asked if the money made by cricket is worth more than the lives of people who have died in recent terrorist incidents.
Owaisi’s statements were aimed directly at the Chief Ministers of Assam and Uttar Pradesh. He remarked, “I want to ask the Chief Minister of Assam, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and everyone else who uses silly language—don’t they have the guts to call off a cricket match with Pakistan?” He talked about the Pahalgam terror assault, in which 26 visitors died, and asked if the BCCI’s “Rs 2000 crore, Rs 3000 crore” profit is worth more than the lives lost.
The opposition’s criticism is a direct reference to the Pahalgam terrorist incident in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which murdered 26 people. People are calling for a boycott of the match because of the tragedy.
Congress lawmaker Abhishek Dutt joined the chorus of critics by saying that playing the match goes against the government’s policy of “no talks with terror.” He asked, “What message are you trying to send by playing a game with Pakistan today?”
So far, the BJP, the national government, and the BCCI have not officially answered the precise questions that Owaisi and Dutt brought up. The match is still a very hot topic, with people getting very upset and the political opposition using the chance to attack the government’s foreign policy.
