AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly condemned the construction of a police post near the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, alleging that it is being built on waqf (endowment) land and violates the Ancient Monuments Act.
In a post on social media platform X, Owaisi stated:
“The police chowki being made near Sambhal’s Jama Masjid is on waqf land, as the records show. Moreover, construction near protected monuments is prohibited under the Ancient Monuments Act. @narendramodi and @myogiadityanath are responsible for creating a dangerous environment in Sambhal.”
Concerns Over Discrimination and Neglect
Owaisi also accused the government of systemic discrimination against Muslim communities, citing a lack of public services in predominantly Muslim areas. He referenced a study conducted by Paul Lovosad of Dartmouth College and MIT to underscore disparities in access to education, healthcare, and public infrastructure.
He highlighted:
- Alarming dropout rates among Muslim women.
- Low literacy levels in the community.
- Limited access to higher education and healthcare services.
Context of the Construction
The police post is being built in an open ground near the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, an area that has recently seen heightened tensions. The construction comes in the wake of violent clashes during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey at a Mughal-era mosque, which resulted in four deaths and injuries to both police and locals.
Local authorities, including Sambhal Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra, stated that the police post construction is progressing swiftly and is expected to be completed soon. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed at the site to maintain security amid tensions.
Legal and Community Backlash
Owaisi’s remarks have drawn attention to potential legal violations, including:
- Allegations that the construction is taking place on waqf land, which is protected under specific laws.
- Prohibition of construction near protected monuments under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.
Political and Social Implications
Owaisi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of fostering an environment of hostility.
“This environment is dangerous not just for Sambhal but for the country. The BJP government continues to marginalize Muslim communities under the guise of development,” he said.
The construction has further polarized opinions, with critics viewing it as a provocation and supporters citing security concerns in the area.
Next Steps
As the situation unfolds, legal challenges and public protests may shape the outcome of the construction project. The government’s actions and response to Owaisi’s allegations will likely influence the political narrative, particularly in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
