Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday attributed the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to continuous pressure from the Opposition. However, he criticized the BJP for failing to present a clear plan to restore peace in the violence-hit state.
Opposition Leaders Slam BJP
- Gaurav Gogoi (Congress MP):
- “The Opposition has consistently raised the issue of Manipur. Our pressure has worked, but the BJP is just playing musical chairs with Chief Ministers instead of bringing back peace.”
- He also called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the crisis.
- Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (Congress MP):
- “The resignation was long overdue. Violence has been ongoing for over two years in Manipur.”
- Kirti Azad (Trinamool Congress MP):
- “The resignation should have come two years ago, after the ethnic violence began. BJP must answer for the atrocities committed against women and children.”
Biren Singh’s Resignation
- Singh tendered his resignation to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhawan on Sunday.
- He was accompanied by BJP leaders, including state party president A Sharda, North East in-charge Sambit Patra, and 19 MLAs.
Background of Manipur Violence
- Ethnic violence erupted between Meitei and Kuki communities on May 3, 2023, following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM).
- The unrest was triggered by a Manipur High Court order directing the government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
The Opposition continues to demand government accountability and a concrete roadmap to peace in the state.
