Opposition Criticizes Frequent Adjournments In Parliament, Demands Debate On National Issues

Opposition leaders in Parliament expressed discontent over the frequent adjournments of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, demanding discussions on pressing national issues, including the Adani Group allegations, violence in Manipur, and recent clashes in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.

Corruption and Accountability

Congress MP Randeep Surjewala, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, emphasized the need for accountability and raised concerns about corruption, particularly bribery allegations linked to the Adani Group. He questioned the government’s hesitation in addressing these issues in Parliament.

“Repeatedly adjourning the Parliament cannot be in the national interest. Discussion on corruption is in the national interest… What does the government have against a discussion on this issue? Why is the government afraid of the word ‘Adani’? There should be a discussion in Parliament on the Sambhal incident and violence in Manipur. It is important that there is discussion in Parliament and accountability is fixed,” said Surjewala.

Call for Debate on National Issues

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram criticized the frequent disruptions, urging the government and the Speaker to allow debates on critical issues.

“It is unfortunate that the Houses get adjourned so frequently without transacting business. The government and the Speaker must allow us to raise the issues, particularly the adjournment issues. We want to talk about Manipur, the incident in Uttar Pradesh, the indictment of a large business house, and other pressing issues,” Chidambaram stated.

Government Responsibility in Running the House

Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure smooth functioning of the House by addressing questions raised by the opposition.

“The onus of running the House is on the government, and if the opposition is asking any questions, then it is their duty to answer them. Answer the questions that the opposition is asking so that they do not get a chance to create a ruckus. Issues like farmers’ concerns, unemployment, inflation, and regional matters such as Punjab’s capital and water rights must be addressed. Public money is being wasted otherwise,” Badal remarked.

Adjournments Amid Opposition Protests

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day amid opposition uproar over their demands to discuss the Adani indictment, Manipur violence, and the Sambhal clashes. The Rajya Sabha also faced similar adjournments.

Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha was briefly adjourned until noon before being adjourned for the entire day. BJP MP Dilip Saikia announced that the lower house would reconvene on November 28 at 11:00 AM.

The adjournments followed a series of notices submitted by opposition MPs in both Houses to move adjournment motions for discussions on the critical issues
